KB4524147 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 1903 breaks the start menu

Start menu

Two days ago, Microsoft released a Cumulative update for all Windows 10 version. While this update is fixed several issues such as Printer issues, it also surfaced a Start menu problem.

According to users on Reddit and Microsoft answer forum, the start menu won’t be opened and will prompt an Error message like an image below when you trying to open it.

Users on Microsoft answer forum give a solution to fix this problem in 2 methods. First, reinstalling the Start menu with PowerShell command and second, uninstalling the update. Do the first method if you’re familiar with tweaking component with Windows PowerShell otherwise, do the second method.

Method #1 – Reinstalling the Start menu.

To do this method, firstly, open the Windows PowerShell as Administrator after that, Copy the code below and paste it on PowerShell. After you run it, reboot your PC.

Get-AppXPackage -Name Microsoft.Windows.ShellExperienceHost | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

Try the second method if this method doesn’t work.

Method #2 – Uninstalling the update

  • Open Settings.
  • Choose Update & Security.
  • Select View update history.
  • Click on Uninstall Update links.
  • Select the update that you want to uninstall it (in this case, KB4524147).
  • Click on the uninstall button.

For now, Microsoft hasn’t given the official workaround for this update. Microsoft also hasn’t updated its support page which claims this update doesn’t contain any issues and recommends users to install this update as soon as possible. We expect Microsoft released an update to fix this or an official workaround for this problem.
